PARENT Christmas Cookie House Making
This is one of our most popular activities, so we try to do this one
every year. The kids, young and old, get to take out all the stops on their
creativity. Everyone gets more than their fill of sugar (yes, Moms, we saw
you picking at the candies, too. :-) ). So make sure the kids (and
you) get a good solid lunch before coming. Often drinking a big glass of
milk will help to stave off the worst effects of the sugar.
What to bring
- Styrofoam trays or cardboard for house platforms
- One box of Graham Crackers per builder
- Decorations to share: for instance hard Christmas candies; candy canes; M & Ms; Skittles; red and black
twizzlers; sprinkles; gum drops; non pariels; pretzels; coconut; food coloring; use your imagination to come up with
more.
- Cookies for smaller builders if you think they will have trouble handling the demands of construction
- One or more recipes of Royal Icing (see below)
- Baby wipes for clean up and anything you may need to protect clothing from 'decorating. :-)
Royal Icing
- White of one egg
- 1/8 teaspoon of cream of tartar
- 1 cup plus 1 Tablespoon of powdered sugar
With egg white at room temperature, mix with cream of tartar Beat at medium speed until foamy. Gradually add sugar
2 Tablespoons at a time, beating at high speed until stiff peaks form.
This icing dries quickly, so keep it tightly covered.
