THE Alternative School Choice

Many parents are choosing to homeschool their children. Academic programs can be designed to fit student and family lifestyles, learning styles, interests, and needs. Due to the student-teacher ratio in a homeschool, children often excel academically. Families are free to participate in church and community activities. Young people thus have an opportunity to develop habits which will allow them to become well-rounded and involved citizens. It takes a lot of dedication on the part of parents to make homeschoolimg work.

The reasons for homeschooling are as varied as the families who choose this alternative. Parents may seek a religious, science intensive, art-centered, or less structured environment for their children. Regardless of their reasons, homeschooling families like to join with other homeschooling families for fellowship, support, encouragement, advice, and compatible companions for their children.

The P.A.R.E.N.T. homeschooling support group strives to provide these services to families in McDonald and Newton Counties. We even have members that sneak in from Arkansas. :)

Membership

The group runs totally on a volunteer basis. Each month, someone writes the newsletter, arranges for the meeting place and theme, and organizes a group activity. It is a great opportunity to show off your family's talents, ask that burning question, and do that activity or take that field trip you always wanted to do. If you would like to volunteer to take charge for a month, please tell us which month. The person who does the newsletter is reimbursed for the cost of printing and postage. We ask for a $12 annual membership donation so the group has funds to cover these costs.

If you have suggestions for topics or activities, write them on a sheet of paper and send or bring it to us. You may also contact us.

We save BEST CHOICE labels. Just cut the bar code from the package with 'Best Choice' printed on them. If you staple them together in groups of 10, it is helpful. Bring them to the meeting, where Miss Jo will collect them. When we gather together 1000 labels, we send them in. Best Choice will send us back a check for funding our group. Any extra, over the publishing of the newsletter, will be applied toward our big field trip each year. The funds are divided among the families who attend to help defray costs of admission and/or transportation.

Announcement

Well, it's that time of year again! Time to pull out the new curriculum; time to start the kids on the right track; Time to get our priorities straight; time to figure out how to fit all those activities into the jigsaw puzzle; time to ... time to ... Time to renew your membership in that all important homeschool support group that helps Mom (or Dad) tokep it going!

Come on. you know how refreshed you feel after the Mom's Meeting. You know how much the kids look forward to whatever the activity for the month is. You know how much you enjoy getting the newsletter with all those creative touches and words of encouragement. Maybe there will be puzzles or jokes for the kids to enjoy. You know how much encouragement you get from knowing that you are not alone in this crazy business. You can always call someone in the group with your questions and doubts. She will be happy to share her experience, insights, and encouragement. How you would miss it if you lost contact with such a wonderful resource.

On this page you will find a form to enter or renew you membership in the P.A.R.E.N.T. Group. You can print it, fill it out, and bring the form and your check to the next meeting. Then you can keep getting the newsletter so you know what's going on. Print a copy of it also if you need to share one with a homeschooling friend.

Some of us have a hard time coming up with the whole $12. The contribution is not mandatory. It does help to pay for printing and postage for the newsletter, but if you don't have it, don't despair. We do need to know if you want to remain a part of the group. So send in the form anyway (or bring it to the meeting). Then, if you have a dollar or so to spare, bring it along to a meeting. We'll put out a cup for contributions at each meeting. So, print out the membership form, fill it out, and get it to us just as soon as you can. We look forward to fellowship with you this next year.

Need resources?

Some of us started homeschooling in the Dark Ages when we had to hunt and scrape for appropriate materials. Not so any more. Now, we literally have the whole world at our fingertips. Choose the category you are interested in and click away to your heart's content. If you have any suggestions for links, contact us directly! If there is something you would like to see here, drop us a note.
